Style Guide – Rules

In the Rules menu of the Style Guide manager, you can create rule configurations that you can assign to an editorial guide.

Overview of the Rules menu



The area for managing rule configurations

  1. Language selection list: Select the language for your rule configuration.

  2. Sublanguage selection list: Select the sublanguage of your rule configuration.

  3. Configuration selection list: If you have already created one or more rule configurations, you can select a rule configuration here.

  4. Create configuration button: Create a new rule configuration.

To create a new rule configuration

  1. enter a unique name for your configuration.

  2. no preselection: You can start here with an empty rule configuration.

  3. select one of the other options to create a preconfigured selection.

  4. create: Confirm the selection and create the rule configuration under the selected name.

  5. close: Close the window. The configuration is not saved. Your selections will be discarded.

 

  1. Clone configuration button: Clone the selected rule configuration. The button is only active if a rule configuration is selected under Configuration.

  2. Edit configuration button: Change the name of the selected rule configuration. The button is only active if a rule configuration is selected under Configuration.

  3. Delete configuration button: Delete the selected rule configuration. The button is only active if a rule configuration is selected under Configuration

  4. Export configuration button: Export a rule configuration as an XML file with the .settings file format.

  5. Import configuration button: Import a rule configuration as an XML file with the .settings file format.

The view of all available rules at a glance

As soon as you have selected or created a rule configuration, the following view appears:

 

  1. Search window

  2. Tabs for the individual message categories: You can activate rules from the following categories in your rule configuration:
    - Spelling
    - Grammar
    - Terminology
    - Style
    - Abbreviations

  3. Refresh button: Display the latest status of your rule configuration.

  4. Rule table
    a. Checkbox: Activate the checkbox for all rules that should be included in your rule configuration.
    b. Rule column: the rule ID of a rule
    c. Description column: a short sentence describing the rule
    d. Count column: Some rules have a counter for rule adaptation, e.g. rules that deal with a maximum permitted sentence length.
    e. Information column: additional information on the rule, e.g. information on which rules are mutually exclusive
